Apple saman HTC Taiwan

March 4, 2010

- AP

iPhone Worm Found - F-secure

November 24, 2009

We have located the first iPhone worm, dubbed as Ikee. It’s currently spreading in the wild, but it’s only able to infect devices that have been “jailbroken” by their owners. Jailbreaking removes iPhone’s protection mechanisms, allowing users to run any software they want.

Affected users will find that their iPhone wallpaper has been altered to a picture of Rick Astley (of Rickroll fame) and the message “ikee is never going to give you up”.

The worm targets users who have jailbroken their phone but have not changed their default root login password. It will search for vulnerable iPhones by scanning a handful of IP ranges — most of which are in Australia. At the moment, we have no confirmed reports of Ikee outside of Australia.

After Ikee infects a phone, it disables the SSH service, preventing reinfection.

To protect your jailbroken iPhone, change your root password. Here’s how.

The creator of the worm has released full source code of the four existing variants of this worm. This means that there will quickly be more variants, and they might have nastier payload than just changing your wallpaper or might try password cracking to gain access to devices where the default password has been changed.

More Facebooking, More Malware - F-Secure Malaysia.

November 23, 2009

Security solutions firm F-Secure Malaysia says greater vigilance is needed as the use of social networking is gathering pace compared to e-mail.

F-Secure Malaysia senior security response manager, Chia Wing Fei, said the company noted the significant shift from e-mail to instant communication channels provided by social networking sites. “This trend has important security implications as this means greater vigilance is required against links and messages sent from hacked accounts.”

“According to statistics from research firm Nielsen, the number of users on social networking and other community sites increased by 31 per cent in the period August 2008 — August 2009, while e-mail use increased by 21 per cent,” said Chia. “It may be too early to pronounce that e-mail is dead but the figures do highlight a growing trend.”

“Cyber criminals have already responded to the changing patterns of communication by focusing more activity on popular social networks,” he said.

Learning to be Skeptical

w constantly online with their computers and mobile phones,” Chia said. “Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter have grown rapidly as people are making use of the constant stream of fast communications that they enable.”

“E-mail account addresses can be faked and people are used to getting mail from ‘unknown’ persons, so they are sceptical of links sent via e-mail,” he said. “It is often more difficult to recognise when a member of their social network has been hacked.’

“People have not yet learned to be sceptical of the links forwarded by their ‘friends’ in social networks, which can lead to infection from malware or to websites promoting rogue products,” he said.

He said cyber criminals sought opportunities to make money from hacking Facebook and other social networking accounts, where the high level of personal trust within communities of friends provided an ideal cover for scams and for spreading malware.

“Instant communications are fun, personal and useful but everyone should also be aware of the new security risks involved,” said Chia. “Links sent from hacked accounts and requests for financial help from so-called friends are bound to increase as social networking sites become ever more popular.”

Wifi with WPA encryption cracked in 1 minute…

August 28, 2009

The second generation of Wi-Fi security systems has now been broken as badly as its notoriously insecure predecessor: Japanese researchers say they can crack WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access), the successor to the old-school WEP, inside of a minute’s time spent eavesdropping on a wireless network.

Details on the mechanics of the attack are set to be announced next month at a computer conference, but it’s tentatively described as taking to “a new level” the previous method by which WPA had been roughly compromised, adapting previously theoretical holes in the WPA system and turning them into practical attack techniques.

The previous method of attacking WPA devices took up to 15 minutes to be successful, and didn’t always work. The new method is said to work on far more devices and, obviously, much more quickly. However, as with the old attack, the new one only works on WPA devices that use the TKIP (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol) algorithm, which is a setting in your router and device setup.

WPA devices that use the newer AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) algorithm, plus devices that use WPA2 — the third generation of wireless security standards — are still safe for now.

However, this does mean that it won’t be long before this attack technique trickles out into software that malicious hackers can use to invade WPA networks. With access to your wireless network, a hacker can potentially eavesdrop on any traffic sent, access shared folders on computers attached to the network, and of course send and receive data (like illegal file sharing or even child pornography) which could then be blamed on you.

To protect yourself, upgrade the security settings on your devices to WPA2 if they all support the standard. Alternately, you can upgrade any WPA device from TKIP security to AES. Check in your router administration console and on your computer for and where how to do this

Solar power helps cut electricity bills and reduce fuel poverty

Ref: 04/90

21 June 2004

A University of Southampton research project involving rooftop solar photovoltaic panels on housing association properties has helped tenants reduce their bills and learn more about sustainable energy.

The new houses in Kyoto Walk and Kyoto Terrace in Havant, have been designed and built by the Hermitage Housing Association, following an initiative by Havant Borough Council, to be as energy-efficient as possible.

The Sustainable Energy Group at the University’s School of Civil Engineering and the Environment gained funding for the electricity generating system through the DTI’s Domestic Field Trial for Photovoltaics initiative (DFT2). The scheme has won an EcoHomes assessment rating of ‘Excellent’ and will be monitored to evaluate its success and develop the concept further.

Dr AbuBakr Bahaj of the Sustainable Energy Research Group devised the photovoltaic systems for the nine houses.  Electricity for the properties was generated in daylight hours by the rooftop panels and power was obtained from the National Grid when required. Results revealed that if 80 per cent of solar-generated electricity was used within the home, annual savings of £132 could be achieved.

January 30, 2009

but it will be provide by charter communications in St louis city in united states.

St. Louis (MO) - Today, Charter Communications announced that St. Louis will be the first city to receive its 60 Mbps Internet service, which they claim is the fastest available residential service in the United States “from any multiple system cable and telecom provider.” While St. Louis will see this High-Speed Internet Ultra60 service, the rest of the service area covered by Charter will soon experience Charter High-Speed Internet Max, which ranges from 16 Mbps to 20 Mbps, as it is rolled out over time.  Charter also claims their Internet speed will scale as the Internet grows.

The Ultra60 and Internet Max options are both scalable, according to Charter. Ted Schremp, Charter’s Chief Marketing Officer said, “Not only are we delivering the fastest speed today, but our infrastructure has the capacity to support even higher speeds as demand and usage grow. Charter’s ability to provide increasingly greater bandwidth is critical to our customers’ use and enjoyment of the Internet and delivers greater value. It also highlights our growing superiority over DSL service.”
