Chinese companies ready iPad clones

There’s a thriving market for ‘cloned’ or ‘knock-off’ phones and computers in China, where manufacturers are already looking to produce imitations of Apple’s iPad

Enterprising Chinese companies have already started making devices that look similar to Apple’s iPad but run the Windows 7 operating system made by arch-rivals Microsoft.

Apple has not yet confirmed whether it will launch the iPad in China, fuelling potential demand for counterfeit or unofficially imported devices. Some Chinese stores are taking customer pre-orders for the iPad, and are importing the device from countries where it is officially on sale.

Apple saman HTC Taiwan

March 4, 2010

- AP

Crabs show how human can spot danger - Scientist

By understanding how animals identify

scientists hope to one day teach flying
robots to do the same.

Research into how fiddler crabs see danger is helping scientists to understand how all animals, including humans, recognise which objects are a threat – and could one day help robots learn to do the same.

The research throws new light on the complex process that enables animals to learn which objects they can ignore and which they need to pay attention to.

This process, called habituation, occurs in all animals - but how it happens in natural situations is still poorly understood says Dr Jan Hemmi from The Vision Centre and the Australian National University (ANU), who conducted the study with his colleague at ANU, Dr Tobias Merkle.

“For animals, accurately learning which objects are threats and which aren’t is crucial to their survival. If they accidently ignore a predator they will be killed.”

“Humans have the same issue – everything is constantly moving around us and we need to learn to ignore events that are not important. This study may help us find out how that’s done.”

Understanding how animals learn which objects they need to be wary of could be used in the future to improve robots and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), he adds.

“A big difference between robots and animals is that animals are constantly learning about their surroundings – more and more, scientists are trying to incorporate this learning process into robots.”

According to Dr Hemmi, the fiddler crab was an ideal model animal with which to test the process of habituation in a natural situation, as it is possible to accurately work out what the animals are able to see while making a decision.

The crabs are constantly threatened by birds flying overhead and people visiting the beach. After around ten minutes crabs can become accustomed to people near them, but will still run to their burrows when birds fly overhead, he adds.

In order to test how the crabs distinguish threatening birds from harmless objects, Dr Hemmi and Dr Merkle made dummy predators fly overhead every two to three minutes, but not attack.

The crabs initially ran away from this stimulus, but after a dummy predator approached the crabs from a close by position around ten times, the crabs adjusted to its presence and stopped heading for their burrows.
However, as soon as the dummy predator was moved farther away to outside their field of vision and then approached, they reacted as if it was a threat once more - and ran for home.

This suggests that identifying whether an object is a predator or harmless not only depends on what the object looks like and what it’s doing at a certain point in time, but also its history, says Dr Hemmi.

“How much of a threat they feel an object poses depends on where the stimulus came from and what it’s doing now.”

The crabs never became accustomed to dummy predators flying in from outside their field of vision, suggesting that if they don’t know an object’s history they will assume it’s dangerous, he adds.

“If an object remains in their field of vision, then they know where it’s been and it appears they assume it won’t hurt them as it hasn’t done this before. When it comes from somewhere they can’t see, they have no idea of its past and can’t tell whether it’s a threat or not, so will always head for home.”

The crabs displayed an advanced ability to filter threats from harmless objects, and became accustomed to the dummy predator while still running from real bird predators that were flying overhead during the experiment.
Dr Hemmi and Dr Merkle hope to use the fiddler crab to understand the detailed mechanisms and pathways that control the process of habituation.

“Seeing how crabs respond to objects that remain in their field of vision, but are moving around, will give us more insight into how this learning process works.”

The paper ‘High stimulus specificity characterizes anti-predator habituation under natural conditions’ by Jan M. Hemmi and Tobias Merkle was published early online on 23 September 2009 in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Studies.

iPhone Worm Found - F-secure

November 24, 2009

We have located the first iPhone worm, dubbed as Ikee. It’s currently spreading in the wild, but it’s only able to infect devices that have been “jailbroken” by their owners. Jailbreaking removes iPhone’s protection mechanisms, allowing users to run any software they want.

Affected users will find that their iPhone wallpaper has been altered to a picture of Rick Astley (of Rickroll fame) and the message “ikee is never going to give you up”.

The worm targets users who have jailbroken their phone but have not changed their default root login password. It will search for vulnerable iPhones by scanning a handful of IP ranges — most of which are in Australia. At the moment, we have no confirmed reports of Ikee outside of Australia.

After Ikee infects a phone, it disables the SSH service, preventing reinfection.

To protect your jailbroken iPhone, change your root password. Here’s how.

The creator of the worm has released full source code of the four existing variants of this worm. This means that there will quickly be more variants, and they might have nastier payload than just changing your wallpaper or might try password cracking to gain access to devices where the default password has been changed.

More Facebooking, More Malware - F-Secure Malaysia.

November 23, 2009

http://www.scandasia.com/php/news_images/short_news_13617.jpg

Security solutions firm F-Secure Malaysia says greater vigilance is needed as the use of social networking is gathering pace compared to e-mail.

F-Secure Malaysia senior security response manager, Chia Wing Fei, said the company noted the significant shift from e-mail to instant communication channels provided by social networking sites. “This trend has important security implications as this means greater vigilance is required against links and messages sent from hacked accounts.”

“According to statistics from research firm Nielsen, the number of users on social networking and other community sites increased by 31 per cent in the period August 2008 — August 2009, while e-mail use increased by 21 per cent,” said Chia. “It may be too early to pronounce that e-mail is dead but the figures do highlight a growing trend.”

“Cyber criminals have already responded to the changing patterns of communication by focusing more activity on popular social networks,” he said.

Learning to be Skeptical

“Instead of logging in and out of the Internet to send their e-mail, many people are nosocial network

w constantly online with their computers and mobile phones,” Chia said. “Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter have grown rapidly as people are making use of the constant stream of fast communications that they enable.”

“E-mail account addresses can be faked and people are used to getting mail from ‘unknown’ persons, so they are sceptical of links sent via e-mail,” he said. “It is often more difficult to recognise when a member of their social network has been hacked.’

“People have not yet learned to be sceptical of the links forwarded by their ‘friends’ in social networks, which can lead to infection from malware or to websites promoting rogue products,” he said.

He said cyber criminals sought opportunities to make money from hacking Facebook and other social networking accounts, where the high level of personal trust within communities of friends provided an ideal cover for scams and for spreading malware.

“Instant communications are fun, personal and useful but everyone should also be aware of the new security risks involved,” said Chia. “Links sent from hacked accounts and requests for financial help from so-called friends are bound to increase as social networking sites become ever more popular.”

Pirated Microsoft Windows 7 DVDs generate $100,000 in India

November 4, 2009

LUCKNOW: About 50,000 pirated DVDs of Microsoft Windows 7 are estimated to have been sold here since the official launch on Oct 22, generating

unaccounted business of around Rs 50 lakh (nearly $100,000).

The reason for the allure of the pirated versions: These cost Rs.40-Rs.250 in Naza Market in Hazratganj here, drawing buyers from not only the rest of Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states like Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Uttarakhand but also Nepal and Bangladesh.

“This is the biggest market in the region,” said a shopkeeper in Hazratganj, claiming at least 50,000 DVDs of the pirated Windows 7 have been sold since hitting the local markets within 24 hours of the official launch, fetching sellers about Rs.50 lakh so far.

The legal version of the new operating system launched by Microsoft Corp costs between $150-$300 (Rs.7,500-Rs.15,000) in the international markets. The company, however, tagged its prices 20 percent below international rates in India, where it is available in the Rs.6,000-Rs.11,000 range through official channels.

Despite the discounted company rates, buyers are opting for the pirated version.

“Why invest Rs.10,000 when it is available for Rs.250?” asked Pramod Yadav, a student pursuing a Master of Computer Applications (MCA) course.

Added Mohit Singh, who runs a computer hardware and software maintenance company: “We pay for only the DVD as we are regular customers. A DVD hardly costs Rs.20-40.”

Most computer service providers or “regular customers” in Lucknow and elsewhere in India use pirated software, contended Nishant Kumar, a software engineer with HCL Technologies in Greater Noida.

According to him, what makes the pirated operating systems more attractive is that cheap pirated anti-virus software is also freely available.

“A lot of anti-virus software, for example Awast, is available on the Internet,” Kumar said, adding that it was equally effective and has the same service life.

Those selling pirated Windows 7 deny doing anything illegal.

“There are over 200 shops in Naza Market. All have everything you want. We are not doing anything illegal as everything is available on the Internet,” said a shopkeeper not willing to be named.

“We are only transferring and supplying to buyers who include students, professionals and even big business houses.”

Those selling authentic software are unhappy.

“Be it software or encyclopaedia, everything is available in pirated form within 24 hours. We do not get the expected business,” Amit Mishra of Newgen Technologies, the authorised distributor of Compaq, HP, Microsoft and Lenovo in Hazratganj, told IANS.

The police express helplessness in combating piracy. “We know what is going on for the past couple of decades. But we cannot act on our own. We need a formal complaint to act or else you (the media) will come down on us,” police spokesperson A.K. Pathak told IANS.

Besides software, the Naza Market and the Naka Market in the Naka area are also famous for producing CDs and DVDs of newly released Bollywood movies within 24 hours.

“You name the movie and you will have the CD, DVD the next day,” boasted Harnam Singh, a Naka shopowner.

How to set Meet-Me Conferencing in Cisco Unified CME 4.1 and Later versions

October 27, 2009

In Cisco Unified CME 4.1 and later versions, meet-me conferences consist of at least three parties dialing a meet-me conference number predetermined by a system administrator. For example, the conference shown in Figure 44 is created when the conference creator at extension 1215 presses the MeetMe soft key and hears a confirmation tone, then dials the meet-me conference number 1500. Extension 1225 and extension 1235 join the meet-me conference by dialing 1500. Extensions 1215, 1225, and 1235 are now parties in a meet-me conference on extension 1500.

Figure 44 Simple Meet-Me Conference Scenario

Configuring Maximum Parties

You can configure the maximum number of conference parties to be lower than the actual maximum of 32 for meet-me conferences. See the “SCCP: Configuring the DSP Farm” section for more information.

Freeing Conference Resources

If only one party remains in the meet-me conference, for example, if one party has forgotten to hang up, the conference call is disconnected after five minutes to free system resources.

If the creator is waiting for parties to join the conference and is the only party on the conference, the conference is not disconnected because significant resources are not being used.

Soft Keys for Conference Functions

In Cisco Unified CME 4.1 and later versions, the following soft keys provide conferencing functions for hard-ware based multi-party conferencing enhancements on your phone and require the appropriate DSP farm configuration. For configuration information, see the “SCCP: Configuring Multi-Party Ad Hoc and Meet-Me Conferencing in Cisco Unified CME 4.1 and Later Versions” section.

ConfList—Conference list. Lists all parties in a conference. For multi-party ad hoc conferences, this soft key is available for all parties in a conference. For meet-me conferences, this soft key is available for the creator only. Press Update to update the list of parties in the conference, for instance, to verify that a party has been removed from the conference.

Join—Joins an established call to a conference. You must first press Select to choose each connected call that you want to join in a conference, then press Join to join the selected calls to the conference.

RmLstC—Remove last caller. Removes the last party added to the conference. This soft key works for the creator only.

Select—Selects a call or conference to join to a conference and selects a call to remove from a conference. The creator can remove other parties by pressing the ConfList soft key, then use the Select and Remove soft keys to remove the appropriate parties.

MeetMe—Initiates a meet-me conference. The creator presses this soft key before dialing the conference number. Other meet-me conference parties only dial the conference number to join the conference. This soft key must be configured before you can initiate meet-me conferences.
