Premiership Summer Transfer News 2008
A recent injection of rumour in the close-season transfer market has at last sparked some movement in which has been a very quiet affair - Roanldo of Man Unt and Lampard of Chelsea aside. Perhaps it’s the current economic climate that is playing its part but for your average football betting punter scanning the back pages of the newspaper or online sports channels looking for some transfer gossip has been hard work as of late.![]()
Reminds me of waiting for a bus, nothing for ages, then there all pulling up in front of you at once. First we get Manchester City looking to buy Ronaldinho for around £22 million and estimated weekly wages of £200,000 a week! Seemingly, this deal was being worked-on before the arrival of Mark Hughes. Would it turn into a successful signing, most premiership betting fans wouldn’t bet against but Ronaldinho looked more than a little lost in his performances for Barcelona last season. It would certainly raise Manchester City’s profile across Europe and beyond if they were to pull it off.
Another Brazilian, this time Real Madrid’s impressive Robinho, has caught Chelsea’s eye and an expectant offer of around £48 million for the highly-rated 24 year old. It is reported that there are many if’s and but’s surrounding this transfer. Real have seemingly used young Robinho as added bait in their never ending assualt to land Man Unt’s Ronaldo. Young Robinho has got wind of this and has voiced his concern as being used as part of a packaged deal. Unhappy Robinho has openly announced his delight to play under Scolari at Chelsea. You get the feeling that this one could drag as long as the Ronaldo escapade continues…
The third spanish team to feel the might of a premiership team hovering over their best players is Espanyol, with Tottenham Hotspur looking to buy Luis Garcia for £7 million. The move - if it goes ahead - puts question marks over the future of Robbie Keane, Spurs’ Irish forward. Former Liverpool hitman Peter Crouch has signed on at Portsmouth for £11 million. Could be quite a partnership up-front in Defoe and Crouch.
