Alhamdulillah, we have finished our library skills sessions with 103 Science students (07 intakes). We really hope the students have benefited from the sessions and will apply those skills taught in their study. Most of the students attended were never been exposed to any library session since they enrolled in CFS. Therefore, they really enjoyed and experienced interesting learning session with me specifically during their hands-on and quiz time.
It was a 2 hours session for every group. Some of the topics covered were resources in the library and its location, how to identify references and the its importance in study and learning, how to use references particularly the encyclopedia and dictionaries, online library catalogue and few important functions, briefly introduction to digital library collections specifically online databases and e-books. Finally, identify few search engines and few effective searching techniques using the Internet.
Out of 103 students, there were 2 full marks scorer, whom both names are Nurul Nadia (what a coincidence!) Congratulations to both of them…. we do have presents for them!!!
We hope this collaboration between the CFS library and Science Department continues for the benefits of the students. Thank you to Mdm Fouziah who initiated this collaboration.
-CFS Library- Happy to serve you more…
CFS library promotes information literacy (library skills) to all CFS students and lecturers. Library users are recommended to attend any library skills class offered or scheduled by the library or department.
What is Information Literacy?
Information literacy is defined as a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate and use effectively the information. (taken from IIUM library defines information literacy http://lib.iiu.edu.my/resources/Information_Literacy_Courses_A_Handbook.pdf)
Topics covered in the session:
RESOURCES IN LIBRARY
Recognize and use the various types of information resources in the Library.
LIBRARY CATALOGUE (OPAC)
Use OPAC and internet based information resources to search books and other relevant information.
LIBRARY’S HOMEPAGE AND INTERNET (includes Online databases)
Be able to navigate the Library’s web site and the Internet to find information efficiently.
The Engineering department and CFS lIbrary (PJ) had a collaboration of having a library workshop to Engineering students in last semester (sem 1 2008/2009). The workshop had successfully done to 50 engineering students who will be going the Main Campus (Gombak).
The workshop mainly focused on information about resources available in the library, how to use those resources, library catalogue and its functions, library online database and searching information in the Internet. The session was handled in both, presentation and hands-on (practical) for better understanding. At the end of session, the students were given a short quiz to measure their understanding and how to use the skills taught in the workshop. For the second session, they had been given questions similar to Information Hunt type and they did it in groups. The first group to submit and all correct was given tokens from the library.
