IIUM Convocation 08
August 23, 2008 | | 1 Comment
Congratulations to all graduates 08, for the hard works and sacrifices. IIUM community salutes you, a fiesta has been set up for all to have a physical pleasure after years of hard work.
Now what maketh a good graduates?.. what maketh a good man?
IF…..
IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ‘em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
‘ Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And - which is more - you’ll be a Man, my son!

Merdeheka: Cintakan Negara
August 18, 2008 | | Leave a Comment
2.’Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the president. ~Theodore Roosevelt (1858 - 1919)’
Seperti biasa setiap kali hari merdeka, saya mesti ternanti-nanti, iklan merdeka dari Yasmin yang selalu membuat iklan bermutu dan menyayat hati.
Salam Merdeka,

A New Method to Speed Up the Internet
August 14, 2008 | | Leave a Comment
Scientist found a new way to increase the speed of internet at users gateway, by slowing down the light. A huge increase in the speed of the internet could be produced by slowing parts of it down, say researchers by using meta material.
The net’s speed limit comes about not in transporting information, but in routing it to its various destinations. As the data reaches its destinations, the frequencies that carries the signals must be separated into its own different destinations, herein lies the bottleneck.
The light must then be converted into electrical signals which are stored, routed, and turned back into optical signals with lasers. The conversion, besides adding significant cost and complexity, also slows down the data transmission.
The optical properties of metamaterials are accomplished by design—which is why they are touted for use in cloaking—and they can be engineered to deliberately slow light down.
The effect could be used to store light signals, with different delays for different frequencies, in a so-called “all optical network”.
God Speed to those people doing the research, the era of video streaming and internet replacing the TV is right out in our front yard…
No more relying to Astro for olympic broadcast…..

IIUM OCS and IPS
August 12, 2008 | | 3 Comments
Hari ini habiskan masa sehari suntuk troubleshooting Microsoft Open Comm. System, problem arises when authenticating Kuantan’s and PJ’s user against Active Directory, in between lies our security device, Intrusion Prevention System.
Thanks to Br. Kamal and Br. Asnalizam for patiently sit with me together from morning up to 4.00 pm .
20+ rules need to be adjusted just for OCS..perghh..
Now the system seems stable, but we gave our self a day (tomorrow) to test, before announcing to the users, systems are running and stable.
I was just informed for IPTA, IIUM is the first to deploy, and a simple check on google, troulbeshootings between IPS and OCS is rare (never been done before?) ..
We are the first?…hehe..perasan….tan..

IIUM Wireless Troubleshootings
August 8, 2008 | | Leave a Comment
Last two days (6-7th August 2008) were hectic with students wireless problems at IIUM Darul Hikmah Library open day.
Approximately 400++ students came.
Based upon experienced on troubleshootings etc with Aruba wireless; the easiest O.S to be configured with WPA/TKIP with token are:
1. Macintosh Laptop
2. Linux Laptop (ubuntu especially, provided the driver is correctly installed)
3.Windows XP
4.Windows Vista
Vista was the most problematic and not stable compared to others. (Wonder why microsoft is giving vista free with the purchase of new laptops ..hmmm?)
Most of the laptops ware succesfully completed, few (less then 10) was not completed because of viruses..lots of them!
If there’s still problem with wireless connection, our support (inclusive volunteers students) can be reach here:
http://wireless.iium.edu.my/support.html
If you’re in Mahallah just go to the nearest wireless support student’s room.
On another related matter:
1.Seems wireless users couldnt access certain websites ( e.g http://www.belajararab.com/) but are accessible using wired network, have to look into this.
2.Seems students wireless have some problem accessing portal my.iium.edu.my, also need to look into this..(as far as i know, there’s no blocking on network security..hmm)
On another unrelated matter:
Today is 08.08.08; I know few people (two in fact) who planned to get married today.. because of the numbers i think? Or is it because it is easier to remember?.. Our people fascination with numbers sometime ..amazing!..Heheh.. So our rate of passing in SPM or any exams in subjects like mathematics should be exponentially increase or like er delta dirac (shoots up)..
Just another ramblings in Friday…sigh

perception and reality
July 29, 2008 | | 1 Comment
a good write by By DR MOHD ZAIDI ISMAIL,Senior Fellow/Director,Centre for Science and Technology,Ikim
The real purpose of religion is to guide mankind not only in distinguishing reality-truth from appearance but also in firmly being with reality-truth.
OF LATE, there have been comments that what matters most in Malaysian politics, is perception. So often have we heard political statements in the form “not only must one be ? but one must also be seen to be ?”
Perhaps, subconsciously and in a subtle way, we have developed a kind of resolve that it is the latter part of the form that is to be accorded focus.
But is this really confined to the political realm? Or is it that many people in this country are easily driven by perception?
It may well be that the mushrooming of the “business” of indexes in this country and the endemic obsession with indicators are, in many respects, the outcome of this perception-driven orientation and culture, which in turn is perpetuated by that very outcome.
In fact, so powerful and predominant has perception become that on issues as important as integrity there seems to have been no better option for us Malaysians than to rely on people’s perception of it.
On July 16, national news agency Bernama reported that the Malaysian Institute of Integrity (IIM) would conduct a study entitled The National Integrity Perception Index Research Report 2008 to determine the level of public perception concerning a number of indices.
The indices are corruption, quality of public service delivery, business ethics and social obligations, stability of the family institution and community, quality of life and community welfare, and public courtesy.
The study, IIM president Datuk Dr Mohd Tap Salleh said, was aimed at evaluating integrity perception levels among Malaysians four years after the implementation of the National Integrity Plan.
It is a mechanism of measurement to determine the perception of Malaysians concerning integrity given the country’s culture and situation.
In fact, earlier, on July 2, during the launch of IIM’s inaugural National Integrity Perception Index Survey Report 2007 by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan, Mohd Tap was reported to have said that such survey findings were important because they would assist the Government in re-assessing existing policies and in drafting new ones, and that a national survey of this sort would be conducted annually.
I suppose, the majority, if not all of us, readily accept that no man can be without perception.
In other words, man is bound to have perceptions. The contention, however, is less about whether or not man can do without perception than whether or not there is such a thing as correct, true and good perception.
Should one hold, on whatever grounds, that there is indeed such a thing, then what is important is to know and decide, which perception is correct and good, and which is not, as well as to be certain of the valid basis and sound criteria of one’s decision.
It is no less important for us to also realise that once perception has been demonstrated to be correct and good, then at least to one who has been convinced of it, perception is no longer “perception” in the sense of “mere appearance” or “sheer impression” but is, in fact, truth reality.
In this regard, one needs to be cognizant that the real purpose of religion, and for that matter, true philosophy, is to guide mankind not only in distinguishing reality-truth from appearance but also in firmly being with reality-truth.
And it is really no use lamenting about our deplorable perception-driven state if no action is taken at identifying as well as addressing what in fact gives rise to it.

Unified Communication and Smartphone
July 28, 2008 | | 1 Comment
I’ve just been informed, Unified Communication only works on Smartphone running on Windows Mobile 5.0 and above.
It doesnt seems fair does it?There goes Smartphone running on iPhone Os, Linux, Symbian and Palm OS down the dustbin.
It’s like forcing the users what brand of smartphone they need to buy or arm twisting the users.
By the way Unified Communication is a product of Microsoft. (sigh!)
